442 or FAKE?

Should I grab it or leave it alone?

442 or FAKE?

Postby kicknrim » Thu Jul 21, 2011 5:14 am

The car's been hiding in the garage of this abandoned house since 1982, and I got the green light today that the owner will sell it to me for a song. Original owner, 86k documented miles, all indications that it's an unmolested 442 car. HOWEVER! Neither the VIN nor the cowl tag indicates it as a 442. I've seen all kinds of write-ups, but none that match the numbers I have. So, my optimism is waining. The VIN is 338077M185xxx. No "W-29" anywhere.

I posted a few pics on my profile (kicknrim). I haven't asked the owner straight up about it yet (original Protect-O-Plate is in his name), but don't want to assume he's a completely honest old man. Gentlemen, what do I have here?

According to above, your VIN is correct for the "post" model car, which is what your pics show. It's listed in many places here that on a 1967 442, you can't determine a genuine car based on VIN and cowl tags alone. The build sheet is your only hope. Even if your car is a fake, if you can get it for "a song," I'd sure grab it.

Only the 442 and turnpike cruiser came with the turbo 400 trans so if it is an auto with this trans it is looking good. Engine should be an E block with C heads. Rear lower control arms are boxedwith rear anti sway bar . Trim tag should have a 5V or 5VY Just from the appearance it looks legit to me!

looking at the stripes it is a 442. Also the hood is a give away. I know that people can add this to make a clone, but seems legit to me. Always tough to say for sure though. You might want to look at the frame. The cutlass did not have 4 holes where the rear cross member is. If you need a picture of what I mean, e-mail me through this forum.

Plucking it out of the garage tomorrow. Thanks for the posts. We'll see what happens.

Turns out he pulled the original 400 in 1973 because of the gas crisis and put an HO 330 in it. I was able to secure that long block, complete with carb. Get this, it has only 60k miles on it. We're looking good. 5VY on the cowl tag, and documentation from the owner proves it's really a 442 car.

Great!! Just to let you know there were common high compression 4bbl engines and low compression engines but no high output 330's. What all is this car gonna need? Nice find!

I'll try to pull some numbers of the engine to see where we're at. The car needs seats covered, a good washing (perhaps a wet sand will bring the color out?), and all things to clear out plumbing for fuel & brakes. Probably won't be me....I think this one's going to market.

I thought all of these were either auto or a 4spd. I'm only finding 3 gears. B&M shifter on the floor. Not even sure what the shift pattern is. Do you know?
