This afternoon, the Padres announced that they decided to a three year contract with catcher Nick Hundley. If youre wondering why they would lock up their starting catcher now when they just traded for top prospect Yasmani Grandal within the winter, hold back until you see the the deal.
The deal is e sentially a 2 year extension, since it leaves his already negotiated $2 million salary for 2012 in position. It simply adds an a sured $3 million salary for 2013, a $4 million salary for 2014, along with a $5 million team option (without any buyout attached) for 2015, which may have been Hundleys newbie of free agent eligibility. So, e sentially, Hundley converted his final 2 yrs of arbitration eligibility into guaranteed money, but did so at the price of taking minimal raises and pushing his first bite at free agency back annually.
This deal helps to make the sense in the world for North park, but Im unsure why Hundley decided to this contract, to be honest. Over the last three years, Hundley has been a well excellent player whilst splitting time behind home plate hes hit .259/.323/.435 in 904 plate appearances, which is much more impre sive considering that hes been playing half his games in San Diego. From 2009 to 2011, his wRC+ is 109, putting him virtually square in line Terry Sawchuk Jersey with Miguel Montero. In fact, Montero is the best comp around for Hundley.
Montero became arbitration entitled to the first time after the 2009 season, so his 2007-2009 resume is exactly what we ought to look at in comparison to Hundleys 2009-2011 seasons. Heres what Montero did in those three seasons:
921 PA, .267/.333/.447, 31 HR, 114 RBI
Were using traditional markers since these are the numbers that determine arbitration payouts, which would be the criteria that Hundley could have been judged on over the next couple of seasons. Now, heres Hundleys last three seasons in contrast.
904 PA, .259/.323/.435, 25 HR, 102 RBI
Pretty darn similar the little gap in HR/RBI can easily be explained away by park effects, and also you dont even have Niklas Kronwall Jersey to quote wRC+ to help the arbitrators realize that Petco Park is a crazy good pitchers park. It should not be a surprise, then, that Hundley settled for $2 million for 2012, the exact figure that Montero got in his newbie of arbitration eligibility in 2010. Similar service time, similar playing time, similar performances, similar salaries. Thats how arbitration works.
So, looking at Monteros salary progre sion must have set a pretty decent baseline for which Hundley might have expected. Montero battled injury i sues in 2010 and regre sed from his prior season performance, but nonethele s managed a raise to $3.2 million in the second trip through arbitration. Basically, so long as Hundley stays healthy and isnt a complete bust this season, he was at line for about a $1 Danny DeKeyser Jersey million raise, along with a strong performance might have garnered him a great deal more. He basically settled for that minimum he would have gotten in 2013 just by staying healthy this season.
2014 is a little trickier, because Montero had an excellent season last year, and set himself up well for his final trip through arbitration. Not only did he hit exceptionally well, but he played in 140 games, letting him accrue the sorts of counting stats that arbitrators like. That led to a nearly 100% pay raise, as Monteros final arbitration salary arrived at $5.9 million. We probably cant project Hundley to have that sort of season in 2013, so were probably best served estimating a $1.5 million raise rather than the $2.7 million that Montero managed. Still, if he'd had gotten $3.5 million in 2013, that will still put him lined up for something near to $5 million in 2014.
So, over the next two seasons, its probably fair to peg Hundleys arbitration payouts within the $8-$9 million range a suming he continued to do in a decent level but didn't establish himself like a premier every day catcher. Settling for $7 million in order to get those payouts guaranteed ahead of time is reasonable, but quitting the club option for his first year of free agency just seems unnece sary. Hundley e sentially agreed to become a free agent for the first time heading into his age 32 season, a period when hes probably going to be unlikely to strike it rich with any type of multi-year deal because of his age and position.
A suming the club choice for 2015 gets picked up by whoever trades for Hundley within the next 12-18 months, this deal may end up costing Hundley somewhere locally of $5 million within the next four seasons, according to approximately what Hundley may have been able to get as a 31-year-old free agent versus being under team control for $5 million with no buyout. Perhaps Hundley is happy to create $12 million instead of $17 million from 2013-2015, but a 30% discount on future salaries for any small guarantee seems a little steep to me.
The Padres were Brad Richards Jersey wise to have this deal done now, despite Grandal in route. Hundleys trade value is going to go up with this particular deal, as any suitor has become going to realize that it wont cost them down payment the direction to make him a full time player and see if he can prove that his bat is legitimate. If Grandal is playing well in the minors during the first 1 / 2 of the growing season, dont be surprised if Hundley is one of the hot names available on the market in the trade deadline. The Padres have set themselves up well to be marketing a very coveted a set in July.
